For someone who’s never done hot yoga before (Bikram yoga), there’s a few things you’ll want to know to better prepare.
- Don’t eat immediately before class. Leave at least 2 to 3 hours space.
- Make sure you are well hydrated, not just before class but at least a week prior. Base water intake on body weight.
- Wear breathable, comfortable clothing as you will sweat – A LOT! And bring a spare set of clothing.
- Wear dark colored clothing to ease embarrassment but keep in mind that you will all be sweating.
- Be prepared to just sit if you are finding it too hard. Everyone comes with different views, ability to cope with heat and physical condition. Do it at your own pace.
- Just laugh if you can’t keep a posture as that can happen regularly.
- Even if your first class is just to sit in the room with the heat, you will get an idea of what to expect. Then, try it classes 3 to 4 times and experience the change in yourself.
The heat allows for more effective stretching and you can see rapid progress as a result.
Just start and give it a go. Too often people find excuses as to why not to go but with an open mind and willingness, you may surprise yourself.
If hot yoga doesn’t suit you then take a look at other types of yoga and find one you like.
